The Savoy Grill London Reviews

The best egg custard pudding, ever. - The set lunch is pricy (£35) - it does have 2 michelin stars but the food is only so-so for 2 stars.

However, you HAVE to go and try the egg custard pudding which Marcus cooked for the Queen - its really wonderful stuff and last I had it, was on the set menu.

If you want a superb meal and you have too much money to spare then fine dine at the Square instead.

How the other half live - Well, when I was invited to go to the Savoy Grill I must confess that I felt as if I'd finally made it. I'd be briefed on the need to wear a suit and tie, although in truth I felt a little under-dressed - I wish I'd dug out my monacle and cane as well. To that point, when our group arrived, I thought that the majority of the diners looked liked they come directly from the morning session at the House of Lords.

In a way I feel sorry for places like the Savoy Grill, existing as they have since the dawn of time and is shackled with a reputation that is seen by some (i.e. me) as being old fashioned and stuffy. That said, it also has a well deserved reputation for great food so who was I to turn down a free lunch at the Savoy?

My starter of confit of duck and foie gras was good but not life affirming; similarly, the lamb I enjoyed for my main course was good but not unforgettable. On a positive note, the wine (New Zealand Pinot Noir)was a great accompanyment to what we had. From what I could ascertain, the group I was with enjoyed their lunches but no one was wowed.

My one big whinge was around the overly fussy french service; the staff were on edge, and that translated itself to the diners. A colleague felt particularly frustrated after having dropped his serviette, only for a Gallic superman (the waiter) to fly in from nowhere, take the item from the floor and then not return with a replacement for a full 10 minutes. But then, I dare say that your Savoy regular likes that kind of treatment.

To blatantly plagerise a well worn jouranlese style...

YOU'LL LIKE THIS PLACE IF:
You have a double barreled surname;
you can trace your ancestory back to nobility;
your son/ daugher snorts charlie with Prince Harry at Boujis of a weekend;
you can name 'blood sports' and 'country pursuits' as one of your hobbies;
you own and still wear a wax jacket; the latest copy of the periodical 'Horse and hound' adorns your coffee table.

YOU WON'T LIKE THIS PLACE IF:
You are part of the other 99% of the population who doesn't do any of the above.
