Surrounded by Art - The Standpoint Gallery is a modestly sized place just around the corner from Hoxton Square and the imposing White Borg Cube. What this place lacks in size, however, it makes up for in charm. Consisting of one winding room and a smaller front room (which is visible through a window to the street), the gallery had an interesting selection of paintings in its exhibit last night, including some mesmerizing surreal landscapes and a bizarrely fascinating layered painting.
The space is kind of neat as well. You enter through a big red door off of a street that is full of its own brand of street art (including an interesting piece by Swoon a few doors down towards Old Street) and find yourself on the ground floor of the gallery. There is a peculiar lift that you can walk through to reach the other bits in the back, and two walls are distinguished by being a step up off of the floor.
The main criticism I suppose for the gallery would have to be the relatively small size, especially of the walls. A few of the paintings hanging now seemed like they would benefit from higher ceilings and more space to own, but obviously that is a limitation imposed by the space, which can't easily be changed. Even so, this is a nice little gallery to poke your head into from time to time to see what is up.
