Asmara Restaurant London Reviews

How about an Eritrean? - Despite London's cosmopolitan nature, Eritrean, and indeed Ethiopian, cuisine remains one of the lesser known offerings. However, Asmara is a great place for an introduction.

So, how to describe it? Imagine a cross between North African and Indian food and you're on the right track but just scratching the surface. Firstly, you eat with your hands, using sour dough pancakes (think sour dough bread but more sour!) to scoop everything up. Secondly you all eat from the same platter.

Choose a few dishes, like lamb, goat, chicken or vegetable tsebhi (stew), maybe some cous cous or kinche (spiced, buttered cracked wheat), and let the waitress lay it all out for you. All the dishes are brought to the table in bowls and spooned out over a layer of injera, the pancakes, which cover a tray. You'll be given extra injera on the side to use to mop up, though pace yourself and try and save room for the injera under the stews as they'll have soaked up all the juices.

Asmara is a family run restaurant with friendly, though slooooooow service. However, what they lack in speed they make up for in a warm welcome and great food.
