Random night out - “Zigfrid von Underbelly – Art Rock Von Roll Industrial Gastro” – whatever it means, it is the title of this Hoxton Square bar. And that is pretty much what you get – cool haircuts and funky shoes, sort of rock sort of chic sort of hipster sort of punk. The crowded atmosphere was not the best, but then again, had I been looking for a random socializing night this could have been the place to come. The venue itself is spacious, decorated in subdued maroon golden-brown colours, moody lighting, leather couches and armchairs as well as various tables and chairs strewn about. Wine by the glass seems to be the order of the day here, of which there is a good list of not too complicated options. It seems a good venue for private hire for media crowds, as there is a private screening room and a catering service advertised. 09-12-07

Hipster Ground Zero - This bar on the northwest corner of Hoxton Square is positively crammed with stereotypical Shoreditch types. Expect to see funky hairdos, flashy sneakers and a carefully cultivated air of ennui among the customers. The place is reasonably big, and on weekend nights just about every square inch is crowded with hipsters guzzling their pints.

To be fair, the place has some good offerings, including a good selection of beer and even a respectable variety of wines by the glass. My friends and I managed to find a miraculously less crowded area and were able to sit down and have a perfectly pleasant conversation, which was great. Service at the bar was competent and swift, despite a huge flood of punters looking to get their brews.

The place is probably more hospitable on a weekday night, but when I saw the outfit of the DJ who was spinning, I felt like I had walked onto the set of Nathan Barley. 09-12-07
