Warm, Friendly, and Delicious - We were so happy to end up at Edokko last night. Yesterday featured the first chilly evening since Spring, and we found ourselves wandering Red Lion Street shivering and in search of food. Our options: a pub meal at Lamb, a meaty feast at The Bountiful Cow, or Edokko, which I had seen reviewed briefly on the web but knew next to nothing about.

Stepping inside Edokko, we knew we made the right choice: it was warm, the staff was welcoming, and it smelled delicious. The menu is daunting at first: nearly everything comes a la carte, and the variety of sushi, cooked meats, sunomonos, rices, and noodles is a bit overwhelming. We all decided to piece a meal together out of many small dishes to try a wide variety. Everything was fresh and delicious - standouts included a perfect version of agedashi tofu (little clouds of creaminess), homemade gyoza, a silky version of the classic miso black cod, anything that involved toro (fatty tuna), and, for fans of octopus, the sunomono. The miso soup and green tea made us all forget that we had been rubbing our hands together wishing we hadn't forgotten our jackets just minutes before.

Edokko isn't Japanese flash, so don't expect a sleek modern space with sake cocktails; it's Japanese tradition and conviviality done perfectly in a small understated space. If you are looking for traditional Japanese comfort food, this is a place to seek out.
