The Wellington is a popular pub located just off Birmingham's busy New Street, which gets particularly busy at weekends. A great selection of real ales are on offer. They offer a policy where you can bring your own food and they will provide plates and cutlery.

Not just for old men - It's great here. I was first told about it by one of the barmen, and was convinced from about two minutes in.

The Wellington is all about ale (alongside the a few ciders and perrys), and once you're there you must take part. Okay, that's not completely a rule, you do not have to take part (there's also the usual suspects behind the bar). But you should.

There are fifteen handpulls with constantly changing ales. The ales on each day are detailed on the pub's plasma screen (it's updated from the website here http://www.thewellingtonrealale.co.uk/beerboard.php) - you choose your ale based on colour, strength, name... and order by number at the bar. Sometimes there'll only be one barrel and once it's gone it's gone. If the staff like a particular ale they'll bring it back. There's a few regulars which keep coming back too. Importantly, it's all in great, really great condition, and the staff can point you towards things you might like. Honestly, even if you're not an ale drinker by habit, try try try. You might just like. (And probably a whole lot more than the usual fizzy lager-pop).

Finally, one of the best, best things about the Welly is its food policy. There's virtually none on sale here (some pork scratchings and nuts, obv), but anyone is welcome to bring their food with them. Plates, cutlery and serviettes are provided and people bring in sandwiches from Philpotts (opposite), frankfurters from the German market (in winter), McDonalds.... whatever. Best eating arrangements in a pub, ever.
