The Cow is a pub of near legendary status amongst the local media crowd. Charmingly old fashioned, its popularity makes it hard to find a seat. The food they serve is European and includes oysters and crab, and you can book in the small dining room upstairs. Private parties of up to 40 people can be catered for.

The Cow London Reviews

Guinness and Oysters - This is a proper seafood-and-beer place, so only go there if these two are things you like. You do get other kinds of food and alcohol but they form the minority in the menu. I went there out of curiosity with some friends after hearing that it was a supposed celeb spotting place. We didn't spot anyone (but of course)! They do prawns in half-pints and pints, and everyone around us seemed to be having that or mussels or some other seafood. The price is a bit steep, but the staff were very nice and courteous - amongst the better ones I've seen. The downstairs bit, where we sat, was rather small. They do have an upstairs bit but it is apparently open only in the evenings (that's what we were told anyway). Nice retro-type decor featuring beer and seafood posters (don't tell me I didn't warn you!).

Overpriced pub - The downstairs bar is a great place to start your evening - provided you can grab a seat as the place gets packed - even on the coldest night in winter. Expect to pay over 8 pounds for 2 beers. Upstairs in the restuarant our starters were fantastic, mains were slightly disappointing, especially at 21 pounds a piece. The whole menu could do with a five pound reduction on each dish, as this aint the Ivy.

Oysters and beer - The Cow is great for some oysters and beer in the downstairs pub area. Upstairs is a more expensive, gastro experience. Personally I prefer downstairs. During the summer they make an excellent Pimms.

Amendment to above:
Ended up at The Cow last night after a request for some oysters in 'da hood and had a really great experience.

First off, I have this total weirdness about eating fish on Mondays in restaurants - perhaps some old wives tale haunting me. Despite this fear o fish on Mondays I went ahead and ordered a couple dozen oysters. I even went further (perhaps the bottle of wine I downed while waiting for a table) and ordered a daily special of prawns on rocket.

Both were excellent. And even more importantly, fresh and tasty. I didn't die - which is always a plus in my book.

My dinner companions were equally satisfied with the (highly regarded, as our server informed us) fish stew and the cote de beef. Also notable was the ham and pea pie (afterall, anytime is a good time for pie).

Always remember to order some cute little half pints of Guinness to compliment your oysters and fresh bread.

Celeb spotting - Know for the celebs that like to frequent, plus an excellent seafood bar with Guiness! We saw Jamie Theakston there (ok he's not A list) but Kate Moss and Gwyneth/Chris are known to frequent. Despite the stars, there is no attitude, the staff are nice and down to earth and the place has a great atmosphere especially on weeknights. Great oysters!
