Sometimes it is best to shop online - John Lewis is simultaneously amazing and annoying. You have to commend them for their ridiculously broad selection - you could probably find motor oil and cello strings if you looked hard enough. There are few places in London where you can find such a variety of things in the same place. But something about shopping here always makes me want to run for the exits; perhaps it is the 1000 pushy shoppers per square foot, the slowest lifts ever made, or because any two things I want to find are inevitably separated by 5 floors and a 500m labyrinth of ottomans, babies, and shopping trolleys.

Some items are very nicely priced (e.g., a lot of the cookware, clothing, some furniture), but then there are lots of things that are just ridiculously expensive (£25 dish drainers, £20 towel bars, £20 pillow case), so watch the price tags. Luckily, you can generally expect high quality from items they stock, regardless of price, so ordering online is a great way to avoid the Oxford Street migraine. 26-11-07
