End of Empire - The days of Empire may be gone for this country, and that can only be good news for 'The Colonies'. Had this pub really been claimed by HM's govn't. back in the day, then I dare say we would have cut it loose some time ago.

I felt on edge as I went into the main bar that was a poor mix of pre-war boozer and modern London pub, and it didn't improve much from there. We sat outside in a dingy courtyard that felt like someone's drive way... an experience that we felt first hand when a white van reversed in to change direction, spitting out fumes in it's wake, followed by a series of open bins being wheeled past - right next to the customers. I was certainly under no illusion that I was in the South of France or anywhere equally chic.

The food seemed pretty poor, even the home cooked fish & chips that I ordered was very bland. Asking for condiments also seemed to be beyond the establishment as well; when I requested more ketchup, the reaction I got from the waiter suggested that I'd just asked 'can you sit a physiology exam in 5 minutes?'.

What amazed me most was that this place was full! Go to the Phoenix which is not far and miles better. 06-09-07

Great pies, slow service! - Typically very busy at lunch times during the week but don't let this deter you from going there with work colleagues. There really isn't much seating inside but you can find extra tables in the beer garden. Tip: make a reservation if you want to sit inside.

The pies here are brilliant. I've consumed many a pie in my time and these are up there with the best. The rest of the menu is nothing to write home about but it caters for everyone I guess.

I have 2 gripes mind you:

1. The service at the bar is very slow!
2. They typically sell out of food menu items - as early as 12:45pm which to me is very annoying.

Otherwise, worth visiting for a solid lunch meal with colleagues. 24-08-07
