Smart/casual hospitality of unique, high-quality foodstuffs in a traditional manner with a modern twist.
Just off Cowcross Street in the heart of old Smithfield. Just the place for great meat; Chef-proprietor Mark Hix has another place in Dorset so the fish/seafood is also excellent.
The winelist is well-chosen and fairly-priced; take a few minutes with an aperitif to check-out the unusually good and apt offerings.
The staff are very well informed about all food dishes and wines so don't hesitate to enquire if at all unsure [much to my wife's amusement, I needed reminding of what 'hogget' is!].
Be sure to phone ahead for a booking as this Hix outlet is very often [deservedly] fully-booked.

Best of British [Good Grub] - A very warm welcome from all the staff; who remained attentive throughout the meal.
We enjoyed the simple-but-effective Tomato & Borage salad and a selection of wonderfully fresh Oysters to get things going.
An attractive gimmick is the presentation of a freshly-baked loaf of bread for each table; great fun and tasty too.
I had a superb 'Porkfest' - a packed skewerful of piggy delights with a bowl of perfect Apple Sauce.
My wife was overjoyed with a most unusual restaurant fish, Gurnard, which she declared to be perfect.
Our guest could not stop praising his chosen Galloway rib of Beef.
I managed a delightful Welsh Rabbit [as correctly named on the menu but erroneously called a rarebit on the bill!], this traditional, greatly underappreciated savoury deserves more attention.
I picked a couple of bottles of St Veran and a decent South African Pinot Noir to aid the process - each was excellent.
