A great British disappointment - Everyone raves about S&M so I thought I'd take advantage of a special offer to try it out (2 meals of sausages & mash, and 2 glasses of wine for £12). I was with three meat eaters who all felt that their sausages were great but their mash was a bit of a let down. As for the vegetarian option, the sausages and mash were a bit of a letdown (get in some nice glamorganshires!).

I know we didn't pay full price, but if I had I'd have felt ripped off. The food wasn't hot enough and the preparation was not fresh enough, it felt a bit school dinners/old school Little Chef rather than souped up English classic. When prepared well, classic English stodge can be glorious, so it's a shame that S&M doens't come up with the goods (incidentally the best mash I have ever eaten was courtesy of the French at Atelier Joel Roubouchon).

The crumble with custard came as a bowl of custard with some crumble hidden in it, but was actually the best bit. Yes it was cheap Birds style custard, but I have a soft spot for cheap custard, so I dug right in. There was a bit of confusion over what crumble was available - we were told apple or apple&mixed berries, so we went for the latter but got just mixed berries.

Randomly, they had some old school metal-looking dudes playing Fleetwood Mac covers which was surreal, but actually quite a nice touch.
