Horizons Fitness London Reviews

A really lovely local gym - I have been a member here for ages. The staff are really friendly and the classes and facilities are excellent. It is really good value in comparison to my last gym in Clapham. I would recommend it to anyone.

How much!??!? - I visited Horizons earlier this week and thought that it had a nice feel to it although I felt the gym was on the small side. I asked about peak hours and was told that it hardly ever gets that busy. I was then shown the pool, which is pretty good for a small club in SW9 and the other facilities were okay.

For some reason they have a very small gym but a massive coffee lounge sort of set up on the second floor. I assume that they rent it out for meetings or something to generate additional income but it just looked like wasted space to me.

Interested enough I asked about membership and was absolutely shocked by the prices quoted. No wonder they opt not to put the price list on the website and instead claim to be ‘competitive’. They actually wanted £65 pcm and the shortest time you could sign up for was four months. They have a three month notice cancellation policy, something I was only told when I pressed them on the point.

Let’s be serious. I live in the area but it is SW9 not SW1 and the facilities are limited. I made some enquiries elsewhere and frankly, for what you get, £65 is NOT competitive. Seriously I nearly laughed in their face when I saw the price.

One plus point is that I found the staff very helpful and polite although I detected a definite undercurrent of disgruntlement with the management and suspect that they have a bad rate of staff retention for a reason.

Final verdict: needs to reduce fees by 30% to be competitive and an attractive option. Don’t join, go to Fitness First for £40, no pool but you get what you pay for which is NOT the case at Horizons.

Worth checking - This gym and pool is run by Durand school. There is a large cafeteria upstairs which is rarely used. The snacks served are fairly unhealthy and similar to the sort of thing available on a train. When the school is using the pool it is closed to members. They have a high staff turnover. Several managers and staff had left over the last few years. The policy on membership, children and additional charges seems to fluctuate. The charge to take a guest in doubled suddenly. - So then no-one brought guests which maybe was the intention. - That was a shame because it was one way of showing friends what it was like. There was a cost-cutting plan to reduce opening hours but it was abandoned because so many members complained and wrote in. They have v. good quality expensive equipment. Recently the charges went up suddenly by quite a large amount and a few members left. Now I see that they have reduced them down by a bit for new membership. The membership is mixed from all groups living locally and also teachers, students staying in the hostel ( that the school also runs) ) etc. Worth considering if you live nearby.
