Food Lab London Reviews

Terrible -
We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night. There were two other customers in the restaurant/cafe when we arrived. When we walked in the door we were completely ignored by the man behind the counter, so after standing in front of him for a minute whilst he re-arranged the pastry on the counter, we sat ourselves down at a table.

We waited for 15 minutes whilst the man behind the counter re-arranged his food display on his counter top and went into the kitchen (we watched him chatting to the chef).

After that we left and went to another Italian resturant. I would suggest the owner hires some secret diners for their restaurant as it seems that the quality of service is dependent of whether they are on site. Shame as it might actually be a star of a place if not for the awful service.

La Dolce Vita on Essex Road - Wonderful Tuscan food - salads, soups, pasta - but fresh, colourful and real.
Real, nice staff.

a huge dissapointment - Went there last weekend... awful food, worse coffee and the lady who runs looked a bit rude, like a prima donna yelling at her staff and putting a lot of tension in the place.

Comfy Lab - Despite the oddly sterile sounding name, Food Lab is a very comfortable little cafe with front patio facing Essex Road. They serve some really excellent espresso here; a perfect accompaniment to the array of delicious pastries they make in-house. At breakfast you can get an 'Italian style' full English or a very good eggs benedict or florentine (although they did slightly over-poached my eggs last time, and the runny yolk is crucial to a good benedict, so sez me). Most other food options are Italian in origin: pastas, focaccias, risottos, etc. Can get a bit crowded, but even then it is a relaxing place for a leisurely time out.
