Whitecross Street Market London Reviews

White(Cross) Gold - Supposedly this market is one of the oldest in London which is annoying since I only found it a few months ago and thought it was new!

Anyway it seems like the main market operates Thursday / Friday and its kind of a lower rent Broadway market, not low rent but its not 100% organic, kosher, free range, GM free etc and blah.

Its actually a tough place to go for lunch because you kind of want to try everything at once - today I rocked the 'Eat My Pie' stall. Last week I tried his Thai Style scotch egg which was pretty good but today I had a Chorizo Pork Pie which is possibly a contradiction but most definitely tasty.

I wandered a little up the market and spied a Portugeuse stall and had a chicken and chorizo pie which was so delicious I went back and grabbed one of his prawn parcel things that was also awesome.

On top of this there's a coffee stall which serves Square Mile coffee which is officially my favourite at the moment.

This market is GOLD and unlike Borough and Broadway its not completely overrun with backpack wearing italians (no offence) or pram pushing north londoners (no offence).

Lunch at the Market - Whitecross Street Market is one of the best places for a good cheap meal in the Old Street/Barbican area, and it makes for an entertaining stroll at the same time. There are also some stalls with fruit and veg, used DVDs, and other random things, but the great variety of prepared food is really the best reason to go. There are good food options every day of the week, but on Thursdays and Fridays the market really ramps up and there are loads of cheap delicious food options plus some of the same vendors you can find at Borough Market on Saturdays.

Luardo's burrito van makes probably the best burritos in London (I know, a. this is asking for argument, and b. there isn't much competition to begin with). They have no idea how to fold a burrito, but the fillings, including a rendition of carnitas and chipotle beef, are really good. There's also a stall that does barbecued Italian sausage with grilled onions served, oddly enough, in a flour tortilla - weird concept but really great sausage. Beyond the various stalls, there are some great shops, coffee houses, and restaurants that line the street that also deserve some attention.
