Red Sea London Reviews

The best Ethiopian.. and Yemeni too - At first sight Red Sea looks like an odd proposition. A mixture of Abyssinian, Iranian and Yemeni cuisine, obviously linked by body of water in the restaurant name, albeit tenuously.

The décor is functional to say the least, Spartan even, very much like a workman’s café, with tables packed close together and solely distinguished by the Ethiopian prints on the wall and the Louisiana (?!) hot sauce on the tables. However, all is made good by the food and service. If you’re unsure about anything just ask and you’ll get a smile and all the help you need.

Now, I’ve been several times and gone for the Yemeni food just the once. It’s simple, mostly rice with grilled or boiled chicken or lamb, and with salad on the side. It’s good however, and for around £5 a huge plate it’s fantastic value for money. And don’t miss out on the fresh salsa that comes on the side.

It’s the Ethiopian/Eritrean food that really provides the draw though. All is eaten with the hands using a flat sour dough pancake called injera. Think sour dough bread plus some. It’s really sour and the injera at Red Sea is hands down the best I’ve ever had. Soft, fresh, full of flavour and perfect for the stews that sits on top of it.

There are many options including Gorred Gorred, extremely rare cubes of beef in a very sharp, spicy sauce, or Ye Beg Wot, cubes of lamb in a deep, almost chocolaty sauce, or Dero Wot, spicy chicken and hard-boiled egg. The vegetable dishes are great as well, getting the same spicy treatment as the rest. It’s all good. If you’re in a group and all order Abyssinian then ask for a communal tray which will come lined with injera, more rolled up on the side, and the bowls of food are spooned out at the table. Break off a bit of injera, scoop up, share and enjoy.

As with the Yemeni food the prices are great with dishes ranging from £6 - £8 pounds which includes the injera.
