The Greenwich Foot Tunnel runs under the River Thames between Cutty Sark Gardens and Island Gardens, on the Isle of Dogs. It is 1,217 feet in length and approx 50 feet deep. Its original purpose was to allow south London residents to work in the docks on the Isle of Dogs. It was designed by Sir Alexander Binnie and was opened on 4 August 1902 at a cost of £127,000. The tunnel is lined with 200,000 glazed white tiles.

Different view - We went to Greenwich yesterday on the Clipper (great day out with a rover ticket). On arriving we walked under the river and had our lunch in the park. What a lovely find, the view over to Greenwich was great.
It was lovely to see and have our packed lunch looking at the view.

Keep to the left! - Yeah its most definitely a tunnel and it goes from the South side of the Thames to the North or the other way depending on which way you're standing.

Also true that people seem to love their bikes through it even though there isn't really the space and its not that long really.

The lifts ARE quite odd - they're massive and quite opulent really - its all wood interior and there's a bench and some old dude that presses the buttons and he's usually on the phone to his wife having a winge about the neighbours or something.

Also the tunnel gets deeper towards the middle and the flattens off and then gets higher when you near the other side - supposedly this is because back in the day, when they had horses down there the horses would bolt if they could see the other end so they made it dip!

it's a tunnel - yep - It is a tunnel.

It goes under the Thames - but you can't see that - cos its not a glass tunnel.

Its cold and its full of people who can't seem to read the signs that say "no bike riding" or "keep to the left".

on the plus side: if the DLR is not running then its handy to still be able to walk across the river - and the lifts (when they are not broken) are kinda creepy (ever been to the tower of terror in Disney's MGM Theme park?).

all in all - its a tunnel.
