Markets in London - Brixton
Atlantic Road , Brixton, London, SW9 8JB
+44 (0) 20 7274 2990

This famous market is part of an exciting regeneration programme involving arts projects and special events, offering a fantastic variety of international food, from Asia, the West Indies, and Africa, including dried fish, plantain, yams and herbs. There are two fresh fish shops selling exotic fish that you won't find anywhere else, butchers, and organic food. The rest of the market offers everything from children's shoes, hats, carpets, jewellery, shoes, fashion, a music shop selling reggae and soul and two hairdressers. Market Row is next to Brixton village.

Market Row London Reviews

Just like Marmite/Vegemite.. - You will either love or hate Brixton Market - I personally love it. A conglomerate of shops and stands sprawling behind the Brixton Underground station in market halls, alleyways, and arches. It's not Borough, but it's not trying to be Borough. It is a market of fishmongers, butchers, bakeries and fruit vendors with fresh and exotic produce at the best prices in London. Food isn't all that you'll find as many stalls sell clothing, household goods and $2 stuff.. I only seem to buy food from the market, but I do love the music vendors who pump out Rocksteady anthems that add to the mood of the place..

The highlights for me: the heart of the market is on Electric avenue - the first street in the area to get electricity back in the 1870s - a wealthy area back then and you can still see this when you look up at the buildings above the shops, some of the best remaining examples of charming Edwardian architecture. The fruitsellers along here are pretty impressive, I personally like Nour Cash & Carry but be warned that it's in a bunker-like complex only accessible via a narrow tunnel... while the Thai Supermarket is the best I've found outside of Chinatown, with a decent fishmonger attached too.
I also love the fishmonger on Atlantic Rd, and the neighbouring Portuguese delis are definitely worth a visit.

It's open during daylight Mon-Sat but I have found that some parts are open on Sundays and I've been after work up until 8pm. I highly recommend it but a warning - Not for the Nectar Card faithful...
