A Taste of the Raj - Brick Lane has a bit of a mixed reputation. Some love it... I don't know any of them, but some do. And some hate it and even if that is the case there is a reason to visit.
Taj Stores is somewhere around the middle of Brick Lane. Just pop through from Spitlefields down past the Ten Bells and the Hawksmoor and you'll be transported to the subcontinet via a cheap and slightly grubby 1970s style minimart.
Up front is the green grocers with a selection of fruit a vegetables seldom seen. Drum sticks, various gourds, stems, leaves, roots and flowers have most westerners scratching their heads and the mystery continues for many who venture further into the shop.
The shelves are crammed with the familiar, vaguely so and totally unknown, with many coming in impressive 'restaurant' size packages. A kilo of peppercorns, turmeric or anis, sir? No problem. Gallon jars of pickles, chutneys or pastes? Please make your way to the thrid aisle.
Whereas many foodies prefer to make their own curries from scratch and avoid pre-mades at all costs, Taj is a usful place to pick up the basics in any quantity.
