Trader Vic's is located inside the London Hilton on Park Lane and many visit simply to imbibe from the world famous cocktail list. There is also a restaurant serving food from an international menu, based on a Polynesian theme. Decor is beach-hut meets Bond Street. Service is friendly, swift and brightly dressed. I'll have a Potted Parrot please - So having had the pleasure of gate crashing an awards ceremony just up the road I found myself leading the way downstairs to the full on experience that is Trader Vic's.
This place is legendary as the first and the original tiki bar, the bar other kitch hangouts aspire to. And the legend is true. I, needless to say, loved it.
The cocktail menu looks like a treasure map, the drinks have ridiculous names and no indication of what's in them so you are forced to choose based on silly name alone, I managed a Potted Parrot and Traders grog, while my colleague manage a "son of krull" (or something equally ridiculous) a drink which came encased in ice - we're not sure why.
We were serenaded by a guy singing what i can only assume are Tiki standards (I was quite drunk he could have been singing country and western and I wouldn't have noticed) and waited on by lovely waitressess who are all forced to wear polynesian costume. Its this kind of dedication i admire in a theme bar. And yet it doesn't feel like a tacky themed bar, it feels like a classy hangout - I'm not sure how they've managed to pull that off.
I loved it, i'm going back right now!
