Courtauld Gallery London Reviews

How a museum should be - You've probably been skating at Somerset House in the winter or maybe an outdoor concert in the summer in the courtyard but did you know that in the same building is one of the world's finest small art collections. Enter from the Strand and turn left inside the archway and you're there. Blink and you might miss it! The collection is housed in the part that was once home to the Royal Academy of Arts and is part of the University of London's Courthold institute. The interior is Georgian neo-classical with a beautiful staircase that takes up the various floors. Quiet and calm - it is a haven of calm from the noise and traffic on The Strand outside. The collection is made up of about four large private collections which came together during the 19th and 20th centuries, spanning early rennaissance to the 20th century. But unquestionably the most important part of the collection is the impressionist and post-impressionist works including Manet's "A Bar At The Folies-Bergere" and Van Gogh's "Portrait with Bandaged Ear".
There's a good cafe there too and the usual gift shop across the other side of the archway. A great place to take your mum when she's in town and unlike the Tate at the weekends, you're not having to jostle with hoards of tourists to get a glimpse of the pictures. Even better, it happened to be the only museum open on Christmas Eve which earned it extra brownie points. And since it's not so big, there's still time to go skating afterwards.
