Tea for two - The best afternoon tea in London. Claridges is great; whilst I can't vouch for the hotel itself (prospective suitors take note) I can confidently assert that there is no finer afternoon tea in the capital. The thing is, you can actually make this posh jaunt excellent value for money if you do it right: book a table for the earliest time slot of the day, don't eat anything before hand, spend hours there enjoying plate after plate of sandwiches, scones and pretty cakes and pastries, go home feeling like a balloon not needing to eat anything for the rest of the day. All in all a delicious and affordable day of food! Besides, an afternoon tea experience where they don't bring free refills isn't a true afternoon tea in my book! So, the quantity side of the deal is done - what of the quality? It's fantastic. Absolutely no doubts there. Go and enjoy!

Fantastic - we went here for the chefs table and it is well worth the money. It was the culinary and waiting experience of a lifetime.

The Poshest of the Posh - As has been noted before, sometimes I enjoy a trip into the dainty world of afternoon tea. Claridge's is just about the best afternoon tea you can get: excellent selection of teas, the room is beautiful, the silver and china are stylish and fancy, there is live music (at least when I went), the sandwiches and pastries are excellent, and they will give you more of anything if you ask. In a moment of inspired un-daintiness, we got an entire second tray of sandwiches and greedily ate them all. They also have a proprietary jelly called Marco Polo that they serve with the scones, which was mysterious and delicious and it left me wanting more (and wondering what on earth the ingredients were).

While I do give the afternoon tea a 5 point rating, I must admit that I can never feel very comfortable in a place this fancy and polished. The second we walked in, I felt watched by the staff like they thought I might nick a pair of silver sugar tongs and bolt for the exit. You might call me paranoid, except for the fact that when I took a picture of us having tea, I got approached a millisecond later by a posh twit in a stiff suit who sternly informed me that I was 'not allowed to take pictures of guests whilst they are eating', after which I spent a good 20 minutes happily enjoying the mental image of me kneeing him in the groin. And, by the way, bathroom attendants should have gone out a century ago, but they still persist in places like Claridge's.

But, despite my minor discomfort at being somewhere so damned comfortable, Claridge's is pure old school class. If you want a proper afternoon tea, this is the place to do it.

Afternoon tea for a bride-to-be - I went here for afternoon tea last Saturday with the family and pregnant hens who couldn't make a debauched weekend in Bournemouth :) It was really lovely. You choose from a selection of tea (plus can have a glass of bubbly as well if you so choose), then you're given lots of trays of yummy crusts-off sandwiches which are happily replenished (as is your tea!) whent he waiter notices you're running out. Finally you get yet more tea and some to-die-for scones, jam and cream plus some beautiful pastries and cakes. The maitre t' as I liked to call him (arf!) was really attentive without being snobby at all. In fact the whole experience was much less snobby than I thoguht and I hugely enjoyed it. The setting is simply fantastic. Champagne tea including service was £44
