Best Chinese in London? - OK so its in Elephant and Castle, which even on its best days is a bit of a hole (sorry to any Tipped-folks who live there), but Dragon Castle is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
The dinner menu is superb - all sorts of things that you don't usually see in a London chinese restuarant (we especially liked the lamb shank marinated in yoghurt) Service isn't super-friendly but given that its practically impossible to spend more than about 15 quid a head to eat more than is humanly possible that seems fair. Weekend dim-sum is also great, but probably slightly less interesting than dinner.

the pearl of the elephant - Dragon Castle
The outside of this building makes me think of communism because it’s so featureless, but the Dragon Castle entrance aims to remedy that with some OTT Chinese styling. It's a bit disappointing that you can't go through the huge ornate doors, but rather a normal door to the side. Once inside you get the full 80s treatment, waterfalls, chandeliers, the works.
However, it’s not the décor you want to go for, it’s the food. I have it on authority from a friend from Hong Kong that the food here is pretty authentic. From a Chinese cuisine Luddite’s POV it’s also pretty good. There’s no grease, oil or bright orange gelatinous sauce around, which ranks it pretty highly in my book. The dim sum is pretty good too.
However, it is out of the way to go for a Chinese, but if you’re ever looking for somewhere reasonable to eat in the Elephant and Castle then make the effort to head a couple of minutes down the Walworth Road. For all the SE17 crew, it's definitely worth a visit.
