The Beefeater Bury St. Edmunds Reviews

Not what I expected! - This restaurant was recommended by friends. I had never heard of it, and couldn't even picture it - even though the location meant I must have passed by it dozens of times. Taking a look at the reviews on t'interweb (here and elsewhere) proved very interesting reading. Just what exactly was being recommended here? I'm not sure I've ever seen so many one star reviews, but if anything that just made me more intrigued to check the restaurant out. It would be either Man vs Food, or Man vs Food Poisoning.

On arrival, I was completely surprised before even entering. How the heck had I never even noticed this place? Talk about unassuming - this was invisible! Also, the name hardly gives any indication of what is inside. Who ever heard of a Greek taverna called the Beefeater? You really can't judge a book by its cover though, and nor (for that matter) from what it looks like internally - though it seems many of the reviews have done just this. I entered, and was totally disappointed at first. Not because it didn't look good, or because it looked dated, or because it was filthy. These, after all, were what I was almost expecting, given the previous reviews. To me, it just looked like any Greek taverna I have frequented in Cyprus or the Greek Islands - not so much dated, as timeless. And certainly not filthy. Simple yes, but very clean.

The menu had the expected meals, and I was torn between choosing the kleftiko, the stifado, the dolmades, or the moussaka. In the end, I went for the moussaka and my wife went for the kleftiko. For starters, she chose the tzatziki, and I went for the hoummus and bastourma. The starters were so reasonably priced, it seemed silly not to try a couple. In fact, after finishing the main, I went for another starter (the dolmades) before dessert!

The food is actually really, really good. I didn't think it was particularly oily at all (as some reviews stated). The bastourma was in oil, but that's pretty much the nature of the beast! I chose the hoummus because it has a couple of bad reviews, but it's as good as any hoummus I've ever had - and certainly better than anything you will buy from a supermarket! Not only is the food really, really good, but it's really good value for money. As a comparison for the value for money, we dined at a pub today where one starter cost more than twice the price of two starters at the Beefeater, and was a smaller portion. (It didn't taste as good either...)

The service is also very good. In fact, it was great throughout. The waiter (the owner/chef's son) was attentive without being intrusive, and was very genial and friendly. His humour was appreciated at our table, and by the end of the meal we had built up quite a rapport. While we were one of only two tables when we started our meal, the restaurant was filling up by the time we finished. When you think about it, for a restaurant to stay in business for the good three decades or so that previous reviews suggest it has, then the food and service has to be better than the one star reviews suggest. Either that, of those one star reviews are made by diners who are actually trying to keep one of Bury's best kept secrets to themselves.

This may well have been the first time I have visited, but it will certainly not be the last - and I will be recommending this restaurant too.

You REALLY need to read this. - Good food, great service, amazing atmosphere. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Don't make me laugh.

Four of us went in after reading previous reviews and sat down near the only other table of people who were already being served. Drinks were provided, and although the beer was ok, the lemonade was flat. I suppose we should've spotted the signs from that(as well as the door to the grubby men’s toilet being propped open for the world to see in to).But as we were hungry, we stayed and ordered gammon & chips, and steak & chips.

Over 40 mins later (during which time a table of 6 had come in, ordered and been served before us) the food eventually arrived. Now, maybe it's just me, but I thought gammon only takes about 5-10mins max under a grill, and steak(rare)about 3mins either side?

The result of cooking gammon for that long?...... Cardboard.

Infact, as well as the gammon being seriously over cooked, the steak (from a steakhouse I hasten to add) was full of gristle and fat, and the side order of broccoli had obviously only been waved near some water and was completely un-cooked.

When we calmly and politely informed the waitress about this after the meal, she apologised and called the manager. Her reaction? She said “Why have you eaten it then? You don’t eat most of it if it’s that bad and then complain”. Having then told her it had been eaten because we were hungry after a 40 minute wait, she removed the plates.

Then she came back.

She knelt down between 2 of us and asked spitefully “do you want me to teach you how to complain properly? If you’re going to complain, you don’t eat the food, you complain first”. Result? Four paying customers rendered speechless, other than one of us managing to comment that this is the worst service they’d ever had.

I insisted she then bring the bill whilst she continued to “teach us how to complain” (which I actually think we did do earlier)and on her return proceeded to comment that “there’s always one”!!

Well I’ll tell you now, if there is always one, it will NEVER be the Beefeater.

That is, unless you like spending money waiting for terrible food & dreadful service.

I'm sad I feel I have to leave this review as I have actually met Charlie who's the owner and I have to say he's a nice bloke. But from that experience, I won't be parting with any more of my cash to him, or recommending the restaurant to anyone.

Never even think of going in. Don't even look at the place. Infact, go to the truck stop. It's much nicer.

Amazing authentic Greek food - My family & I have eaten here several times & have never been disappointed. The food is always spot on, the menu is varied and fairly priced & I can highly reccommend the Lamb Tava. It's a lovely traditional rustic Cypriot family run restaurant serving delicious Greek cuisine. If you want slick but anonymous service and high street chain restaurant style food look elsewhere. However if you want some of the best steaks I have ever eaten & stunning Greek food with friendly service, a quirky atmosphere and very resonable prices give 'The Beefeater' a try.

Great steaks! - Been eating here for a few years now. The food is absolutely superb, greek food cooked fresh by the chef from scratch. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Bury for a steak! Always cooked how YOU like it. Nowhere else has come close for their steaks, occasionally eat the greek food, full of flavour and always served hot unlike some restaruants i've been to.
Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a nice friendly atmosphere with good food.
