A pleasant surprise - I was somewhat dubious when a friend decided to celebrate her birthday at Madame Jo Jo's last Friday, with some 'deep funk'. I'm not sure why, but in my head I imagined Madame Jo Jo's to be a bit rough n' ready, a bit spit n' sawdust.

We all rocked up just before 11 on a Friday night. Happily enough there were no queues, and it was easy enough to get a drink. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor - it consisted of 3 stages - the bar stage was spacious, which led to a carpeted area with seating round the edges, finally descending down some steps to the dance floor. The music was great and made everyone want to get up and dance.

The crowd were pretty friendly. From what I could tell most were French or Spanish (or perhaps I'd had too much Sambucca?). There were lots of people dancing but it never got too crowded. Bouncers were friendly and forgiving to all the smokers crowded outside.

My only gripe would be the prices. £6 entry before 11pm and then at £5 a drink it makes for a pricy evening. 09-12-08
