The Blackfriar is a charming pub whose unique interior has an Art Nouveau influence. This is a popular place to unwind after work and can get very busy. They serve traditional pub food as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits. They can cater for private parties of up to 100 people on Saturdays only. Seating on the pavement area is provided, weather permitting.

The Blackfriar London Reviews

Prepare to stand and drink - If you want to stand and drink pints in a crowded indoor or outdoor atmosphere, this is the place to do it.

It's a busy spot unless you visit later in the evening, but it is well-worth it.

Can't say much that hasn't been said in previous review.

Fun with merry monks - I've never been anywhere quite like the Black Friar, which is directly opposite Blackfriars train station, just across the road from the bridge.

The building itself is a wedge shape at a traffic junction. I can't possibly go into the history of the place here (far too long, not enough room!) but suffice to say this place is interesting enough to have survived a planned demolishing in the 1960s, after a high profile campaign my Sir John Betjeman amongst many others. Inside it is easy to see why it is so popular and well loved, it is less a pub and more a huge work of art. The walls are covered in marble, carved with illustrations of monks having a jolly time. The best part is surely the small low ceilinged area, with walls and ceiling covered in intricate and fun designs - nursery rhyme characters, words of wisdom and yet more monks. I can't possibly do it justice in writing, you'll have to go and see it for yourself (where you will find plenty of information on the pub's history too).

Oh, and the beer's not bad either, with a good selection of different ales amongst the usual suspects. The food looked pretty good, with a special pie menu inside the normal pub fare. It is now operated by the Nicholson's chain, but doesn't lose any sort of charm in that. Go go go check it out! I've heard it can get very busy though, so might be best enjoyed on a weeknight (after the suits have passed) or weekend afternoon.
