Union Theatre London Reviews

BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS - When you think about your childhood what do you remember? Days spent running about in a park or field without a care in the world, a time when a Panini was a type of collectable sticker and not your lunch, days when it was fully acceptable to pick your scabs and tell someone about it!

Dennis Potter’s Blue Remembered Hills brings childhood memories into startling focus.

Fandango Theatre Company is delighted to be staging Dennis Potter’s, perhaps best loved, play at the Union Theatre in SE1 from 30th September till 18th October.

On a sunny, summer afternoon in 1943, seven children play in the hills, fields, and forests of bucolic England. As they tease, fantasise and fight the day away, their innocence is about to be destroyed forever.

The children will all be played by adults.

Blue Remembered Hills was originally shown on the BBC’s A Play for Today series in 1979. Following Dennis Potter’s huge success with Pennies from Heaven the year before, Blue Remembered Hills became another instant classic and won him a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Single Play’ in 1980. Who can forget Michael Elphick as bully boy Peter and Helen Mirren as pretty daddies girl Angela. The National Theatre staged a wonderfully received production in 1996, directed by Patrick Marber with Steve Coogan leading the cast.

Playing Mummies and Daddies or Cowboys and Indians, collecting jam jars or hunting squirrels are all in a day’s play when you’re seven in 1943. But with no adults around, the children’s adventures become more and more daring. For these seven children the next game might just be one adventure too far…

Blue Remembered Hills is produced by Fandango Theatre Company and directed by Jamie Honeybourne
